Thin and lightweight
Lightweight lenses feel more pleasant and can be worne without stress. Thin lenses are less visible and look more favorable. Especially in rimless glasses or thin frames thin lenses are in great demand.
Apart from your dioptric measurements the
material
and
lens
design are the most important factors with regards to thickness and weight of a lens. Plastic lenses are lighter in weight, but a bit thicker compared to mineral lenses. Mineral lenses can be manufactured much thinner but they can also break.
This applies to all materials: The higher the refractive index of the lens, the thinner the lenses can be manufactured. Higher refractive lenses are thinner and have less weight – despite having the same lens effect and radius – than normal refractive lenses. An
aspherical cut (AS)
or individual
center thickness reduction (MDR)
can help reduce the thickness (and thereby the weight) of the lens.
