Astigmatism Astigmatism is a problem which is caused by an irregular cornea. Penetrating rays are not evenly refracted on the irregularly shaped cornea. The eye cannot anastigmatically reproduce penetrating rays, every point of the image is perceived as a blurred line. Astigmatism can be found in combination with short-sightedness and long-sightedness or as an individual ametropia.
